Brimstones & rainbows – Book Review

I enjoyed reading this not because the story is a happy one but because it’s one that needs to be told. Set in Ojiji village and then Lagos, Nigeria, this story explores the life of Iyunola aka Ruby Bamijoko who was orphaned at 10 years old and had to be married off to an old …

The joys of motherhood by Buchi Emecheta

I didn’t know what I was getting into when I started this book. I posted a photo on Instagram and my comments were filled with people warning me for the journey ahead but I still didn’t get it. I read this in 3 days and that consisted of me staying up late at night to …

Saving Ruby King – Book Review

Hey friends! How are you doing? Another book review here! (I’m on a roll – I think). So I randomly came across Saving Ruby King on bookstagram weeks ago but I ignored it. Fast forward to two weeks later when I was trying to decide on what to read after reading Becoming by Michelle Obama. I went …

A lesson before dying – Book Review

A lesson before dying is a powerful and moving book. It was partly based on a true life story of Willie Francis, a young black man sentenced to death by the electric chair twice in Louisiana, in 1945 and 1947. He is best known for surviving a failed execution by electrocution in the United States. This book …

Book review Dreams and assorted nightmares by Ab Book review

Dreams and assorted nightmares by Abubakar Adam Ibrahim (4⭐️)

___
I mentioned earlier that for short stories, it’s nicer if the first story is great because that sets the pace and tone for the rest but you know what is even more amazing? (I just realized), ending with a perfect story! I got the latter with this book and it was great!

___
There’s also something about short stories that are somewhat connected be it through the town they’re set in or the characters (siblings/parents/neighbors). These stories always feel wholesome. I think this is becoming a common trend and I am not complaining.

In this book the common factor is the fictional town Zango where strange things happen and people are dealing with so much shit. It’s not a book with happy stories but it’s worth reading.

Stories I liked

Mororo’s masterpiece
A very brief marriage (I don’t know if the author was going for a funny story with this but I laughed out loud a few times)
Daughters of Bappa avenue
Melancholy
What the sand said
Naznine

____
The one thing I didn’t like was I kinda felt from the synopsis I’d expect a lot more supernatural things happening but I didn’t get that till the last few stories. However, the last story wrapped the book up perfectly and bumped up my rating by 0.5 because it was so good!

___
Themes in this book were loss, grief, mental illness, love.
