7 Bookish gift ideas for book lovers.

Hey people. How are you? (I’m genuinely curious.) I can’t be the only one with friends who send messages like “ what can I get you? I’m scared to buy a book because I’m sure you’ve read it.” My response is always ‘$$$$’ but this is not why I’m here. I’m here for the lazy …

Friday Quotes- All about love by Bell Hooks

Hey friends. I’m writing this during one of what you can call my “lucid intervals” – You only have to replace unconsciousness with excessive sleeping. I almost have no control of it. It’s funny how the body works and this is coming from a medical doctor who essentially studied the body for years and is …

Book review – A broken people’s playlist by Chimeka Garricks

I was excited to read ‘A broken people’s playlist’ because I’ve been a fan of Chimeka Garricks ever since I read ‘Tomorrow died yesterday’ and I just needed something light to end the year with. This is a collection of 12 short stories set in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. These stories were inspired by songs and …

Book Haul – March 2021

Hey people. So I decided to get a few books last week. They’re mostly thrift books and I’m excited to read them. (Screaming internally because I don’t have the time to read these books I keep buying but I won’t stop buying them). I bought 6 books this month and I’ll share all six of …

Friday Quotes

Hey friends! How is the first week in March going ? I hope everyone is keeping safe and thriving. I think I should state that Friday Quotes may not happen every single week because there are weeks where I don’t read as much and I only want to share from the books I’m currently reading. …

The gilded ones explores the life of a sixteen year old girl, Deka who was raised by her parents in Irfut, a small village in Northern Otera. For context, Otera is deeply patriarchal.

“Our whole lives, we’ve been taught to make ourselves smaller, weaker than men. That’s what the infinite wisdoms teaches — that being a girl means perpetual submission.”

All her life, she has looked forward to the purity ceremony where young girls are put through the razzest ordeal to determine if they’re pure or not. 🙄Deka has anticipated this because she’s ready to finally be officially pure and accepted by her community but she got the shock of her life when she realized how ‘impure’ she was. She suddenly develops these powers and doesn’t know what to do with them neither is she particularly thrilled about these changes. This book takes us on her adventurous journey to self discovery.

I really liked how Namina wrote about the female characters in this book and how diverse they were. I also really liked how applicable the entire book is to the real world in the sense that it portrays the importance of not just accepting problematic/misogynistic traditions but actually thinking for yourself and dismantling the patriarchy!
