I randomly came across this book at the bookstore last month and was drawn by the cover. I also knew Read Caribbean would be happening this month and thought it’d be a good addition to the list of books I plan to read. In this post, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on Sweetness in the skin by Ishi Robinson.
My thoughts
Set in Jamaica, this novel follows 13-year-old Pumpkin, who lives with her mother, aunt, and grandmother. She has a strained relationship with her mother but feels a strong connection to her aunt, whom she resembles in many ways. Although I don’t typically read YA novels, I’m glad I picked this one up. The story is engaging, and I found the main character very likeable and it was easy to root for her throughout the book.
I would have liked the author to explore the relationship between Pumpkin’s mother, her aunt & grandmother and the major themes in this book a bit more but I enjoyed reading it.
I think this is a good book for young readers as the message in this one is very clear and important.
Something that resonated with me.
Sometimes you think you want something because that’s what you’re supposed to want or it is what you wanted at some point in your life but it is so important to look inward, find & love yourself and allow yourself change your mind & just do what you really want to do.
Themes
Classism, Colorism, Family, Abuse.
