Book review – Just as I am by Cicely Tyson

Hey friends! How are you doing? I remember reading Just as I am by Cicely Tyson over two weeks ago and gushing about it. It’s funny how this is one of my best reads so far and it’s nonfiction. The irony! Anyway, I knew I was going to review this book about 10% in. In …

Book Review – Ghana must go by Taiye Selasi.

I have always wanted to read Ghana must go by Taiye Selasi but I’ve also always pushed it down my list. I decided to read it last year and I’m so glad I did. Ghana must go is a debut novel by Taiye Selasi and is set in Ghana, USA and Nigeria. I read the …

Book review – Together apart by Erin. A. Craig

I stumbled on Together Apart by Erin. A. Craig on theheartofabookblogger’s blog and immediately wanted to read it. I was intrigued by the fact that these stories are set in 2020 when the pandemic started and we were all just trying to navigate life with these new rules. Together apart is a collection of 9 …

Book review – To dance with shadows by Ify Tony-Monye

I have really been into books by African authors lately so I was really glad to get this book from Masobebooks in exchange for a honest review. To dance with shadows was intriguing to me the moment I saw the cover and I was a bit too eager to read it. Trigger Warning Sexual abuse …

City of Girls – Book Review

I have always wanted to read this book. I attempted reading the ebook in 2019 but I honestly couldn’t get past the first few chapters. I am not one to struggle and force myself to read books so I dropped it. Over a year later, I was trying to order books and I wanted a …

Book review Dreams and assorted nightmares by Ab Book review

Dreams and assorted nightmares by Abubakar Adam Ibrahim (4⭐️)

___
I mentioned earlier that for short stories, it’s nicer if the first story is great because that sets the pace and tone for the rest but you know what is even more amazing? (I just realized), ending with a perfect story! I got the latter with this book and it was great!

___
There’s also something about short stories that are somewhat connected be it through the town they’re set in or the characters (siblings/parents/neighbors). These stories always feel wholesome. I think this is becoming a common trend and I am not complaining.

In this book the common factor is the fictional town Zango where strange things happen and people are dealing with so much shit. It’s not a book with happy stories but it’s worth reading.

Stories I liked

Mororo’s masterpiece
A very brief marriage (I don’t know if the author was going for a funny story with this but I laughed out loud a few times)
Daughters of Bappa avenue
Melancholy
What the sand said
Naznine

____
The one thing I didn’t like was I kinda felt from the synopsis I’d expect a lot more supernatural things happening but I didn’t get that till the last few stories. However, the last story wrapped the book up perfectly and bumped up my rating by 0.5 because it was so good!

___
Themes in this book were loss, grief, mental illness, love.
