I finally read my most anticipated read of the year, “Blue sisters” by Coco mellors and I can’t wait to share my thoughts! After reading Cleopatra and Frankenstein in 2022, I couldn’t stop raving about it. So, when I heard that the author had a sophomore novel being released this year, I was thrilled. I even got a copy of on the very day it came out. Did it live up to my expectations? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!
My thoughts
Blue Sisters follows three sisters—Avery, Bonnie, and Lucky as they grapple with the death of their sister, Nicky. The opening pages introduce the sisters in a way that quickly familiarizes readers with their personalities and dynamics.
The novel explores heavy themes such as addiction, mental health, and the self-sabotaging tendencies of the sisters. I found the dynamics of the sisters particularly compelling, especially Avery as the eldest who is thrust into a caretaker role at a young age. It examines the pressure she faces and how it shapes and influences her choices.
The portrayal of grief in Blue Sisters is raw and honest, illustrating that there is no single way to grieve. Despite their distinct personalities, the sisters share similarities in how they process their loss. I particularly enjoyed the exploration of motherhood, especially the healing conversations that take place. The insights into the mother-daughter relationship and the mother’s behavior were thought-provoking. However, I often feel frustrated when characters acknowledge generational trauma but do not take steps to prevent it from being passed down. On a positive note, I appreciated the honesty in the conversations surrounding this theme.
That said, the pacing can feel slow at times; I found myself reading it over the course of a couple of weeks. Also, some parts lean more toward telling rather than showing. Overall, Blue Sisters is an emotional and thought-provoking read that I highly recommend.
