I often get asked how I became an avid reader and my answer is always ‘I don’t know. I just started reading and it became a habit.’ My earliest memory of reading was me at the age of 7 getting lost in the graphic book titled “My book of bible story“. I probably read it like 100 times and then I went from this to sharing novels with my best friend in secondary school. We would read books, exchange books and meet up after school to talk about books. Anyway, In this post, I will be sharing 8 tips on reading more.
STRUGGLING TO READ? HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR YOU!
Find a genre you actually enjoy.
This is the toughest part because you might have to read different genres to actually determine which you enjoy more. While some enjoy non-fiction (memoirs and self-help books), others love fiction. One way to make this process easier is to make sure you don’t force yourself to finish any book. If you already know the genres you like, then you’re one step closer to becoming an avid reader.
Read a short book.
Start small so you don’t overwhelm yourself. I’ve been reading for so long and I still shy away from big books. There are lots of short books with less than 200 pages. I recently read The secret lives of church ladies and It was short and enjoyable. I’m working on a post and will make sure to update this once it’s published.
Read a fast paced book.
If you’re someone like me who gets distracted easily, then I’ll advise you to start with a fast-paced book. A book that’ll have you on the edge of your seat is always a good choice.
Make a conscious effort to read.
Look at it this way – You know when you decide to drink more water and right after getting a cute water bottle, you set reminders on your phone to drink water. That same logic works for reading. Find time to read even if it’s for a few minutes every day. You have to be intentional.
Try different forms of books.(Ebooks/Audiobooks)
Thank God for technology! We can now read different forms of books. I personally read ebooks and listen to audiobooks on my phone. (I need a Kindle) Right now, I use Scribd.
Replace one of your old habits with reading.
As long as you’re human, there will always be habits you’ve cultivated over the years – good or bad. I personally am a bit obsessed with social media and would always be found scrolling through Twitter. So, what I did was reduce the time I spent on Twitter to create more reading time. It works perfectly for me and I think it will work for anyone too.
Join a bookclub.
This is a great way to hold yourself accountable. Knowing that you’ll be discussing a book with a group of people at the end of the month gives you that extra push to read. There are so many amazing book clubs online. Find your tribe.
Get a library card.
If you live in a country where libraries actually function, this is a great way to find amazing books (or a life partner… just kidding)It also gives you the opportunity to read on a budget. Read more, spend less.
Lastly….
Don’t forget, you can become good at almost anything if you keep at it. So try to read a few pages every day.
I hope you find these tips useful. Cheers to reading more books and enjoying every bit of it.
