2021 is over in one month and I’m still struggling to come to terms with it. I mean, it was just the pandemic year yesterday? I don’t understand. This year has been my worst and best year yet. It’s difficult to explain without context, but if you’re a subscriber and you get my newsletters, you might understand why. (If you haven’t subscribed, there is still more than enough time for you to join the party. We’re welcoming over there!) I haven’t read much in the last few weeks, and I’m not sure I’ll read a lot in the coming weeks, but I’ve decided to share the 5 books I’m hoping to read before 2021 is over.
In no particular order
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
I’ve not read any bad review of this book and I know I’ll like it because it features a woman in STEM possibly falling in love. Plus romance and steamy scenes? Count me in! My eldest sister, Gbemi got this for me last month and I’m very excited to read it.
How We Met by Huma Qureshi
This has been on my TBR list ever since I saw a review of it on Instagram. It’s nonfiction, and I’ve been on my nonfiction vibe this year. So, I’m positive I’ll enjoy reading it. I might not relate to everything she talks about in the book, but I definitely know what it feels like to be pressured to get married and have your life together once you clock 30.
The Mountains Sing by Nguyēn Phan Qué Mai
A lot of trusted bookish friends have been on my ass to read this book. I actually started it as an audiobook earlier in the year but I gave up about 20% in. The timing wasn’t right. I got the hardcover because I’m genuinely ready to read it again. So, fingers crossed!
Men Don’t Cry by Faïza Guène
I was gifted a copy by the people at Cassava Republic and I know I want to read it before the year ends. Reading books exploring other African countries is something I want to improve on.
Love Is Beautiful When In Bloom by Lara Kareem
I make so much noise about how African writers need to write less about trauma/suffering and more about happy stuff. Yes, we also experience joy, love and other beautiful things and that’s one of the reasons I have been wanting to read this book since it got out. I got an e-ARC but I think there was a lot going on in my life at the time and I just couldn’t give it my attention. Hopefully, I get to read it before the year ends.
I know this is a very ambitious list considering I’ll be very busy in the next few weeks but I can only hope right??
I also know I’m not the only ambitious reader. So, let me know if there is any book you’re hoping to read before 2021 is over.
