I have been a huge fan of Abby Jimenez since reading the first two books in this series. She writes romance beautifully and her characters always have so much depth making her books such a delight to read. Just for the summer is one of my most anticipated reads this year and I was so excited to buy a copy. In this post, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on it.
My thoughts
Emma is a travel nurse, and Justin is a software engineer. Emma and Justin’s paths cross through a Reddit post, sparking a connection that leads to the unfolding of their love story as Emma decides to travel to the state where Justin lives, just for the summer. To some, it may sound crazy to move to a different state for a guy you’ve only known online for a few weeks but I personally thought that was brave – and also very much like me. LOL
It might sound ridiculous, but I knew I’d like it from the first page. Despite coming from different backgrounds, Emma and Justin both carry some heavy baggages from their pasts—Emma with her rocky relationship with her mom, and Justin dealing with the loss of his dad. The characters individually were likeable, and it made sense that they clicked. As someone who values quality time and acts of service, this book was everything. The way these characters showed up for each other was heartwarming – even the side characters. The sisterhood between Emma and Maddie was beautiful to read.
Abby Jimenez built an incredible fictional world with this series and if she decides to add 5 more to it, I’ll read every one of them. Seeing some of her older characters like Jacob from Yours truly pop up in this one made my heart leap. It takes real talent for readers to get all giddy seeing familiar faces from past books.
I especially loved how Abby explored the theme of friendship, both among women and men. True friendships shine through beautifully in this story. Other themes explored were parental abandonment, neglect, and grief. But through it all, the love story between Emma and Justin steals the show. Their connection is so real, and as a reader, I was totally invested in their happily ever after. I found myself smiling and grinning because I couldn’t contain the cuteness and heart-fluttering moments. I truly didn’t want this story to end.
This was the easiest 5 stars I’ve given a book this year. I highly recommend this.
