Hello Readers! Long time, no review! How’s the year treating you so far? I hope it’s off to a great start for you. For me, it’s been…pretty good. I start a new job next week, which is exciting, but I can’t lie—I’m a little sad about having less time to read. Sadly, working is the only way I can keep a roof over my head and afford my book-buying habits! So, I got an advanced audio copy of The favorites by Layne Fargo on Libro but didn’t start it up right away. Then I started seeing it everywhere on Instagram, and that gave me the push I needed to bump it up my list. And honestly? I’m so glad I did.
Synopsis
‘She might not have a famous name, funding, or her family’s support, but Katarina Shaw has always known that she was destined to become an Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha, a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their instant connection makes them a formidable duo on the ice. Clinging to skating—and each other—to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice dancers, captivating the world with their scorching chemistry, rebellious style, and roller-coaster relationship. Until a shocking incident at the Olympic Games brings their partnership to a sudden end. As the ten-year anniversary of their final skate approaches, an unauthorized documentary reignites the public obsession with Shaw and Rocha, claiming to uncover the “real story” through interviews with their closest friends and fiercest rivals. Kat wants nothing to do with the documentary, but she can’t stand the thought of someone else defining her legacy. So, after a decade of silence, she’s telling her story: from the childhood tragedies that created her all-consuming bond with Heath to the clash of desires that tore them apart. Sensational rumors have haunted their every step for years, but the truth may be even more shocking than the headlines.”
My thoughts
This is my first time reading a book by Layne Fargo and it certainly won’t be my last. She really knows how to keep your attention. The Favorites is messy, dramatic, and so addictive, it’s impossible to put down. The audiobook was such a treat & the full cast completely elevated my reading experience. I won’t go into much detail about the plot because the synopsis already does that. The documentary-style format made it feel even more immersive. If you’re liked books like Carrie Soto Is Back or Daisy Jones & The Six, you’ll definitely see some similarities here. It definitely felt familiar in the TJR way, especially with such a memorable female protagonist. (Fun fact: The author even mentioned her in the acknowledgments! It was an AHA! moment)
Now, let’s talk characters. Most of them were very unlikeable but, I didn’t mind because they were also so entertaining. I didn’t have a favorite character but I did like Garrett as I found him sweet. I also was fond of Veronica. She’s very strict and I love a strict woman. I admired the strength of the main female protagonist Katarina, but the romance wasn’t my cup of tea. I guess I’m not a fan of toxic love.
One thing this book nails is the drama. It’s nonstop, and every relationship feels so intense. You feel everything: the highs, the lows, the tension. It’s all there. That said, if drama isn’t your thing, this might be a bit much. But for me? Never a dull moment.
Now for the ending. It felt…unfinished. Like there were pieces left hanging and unresolved but just put together to conclude the story. Look, I get that things don’t have to end perfectly but something here didn’t quite sit right with me. That said, I try to remind myself not to impose my own expectations on a story. Characters make choices that feel true to them, even if those choices don’t align with what I’d prefer.
Overall, The Favourites was such a gripping and entertaining read. If you love drama, messy but fascinating characters, and a story that pulls you in from start to finish, the audiobook is absolutely worth checking out.
