I stumbled upon “How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water” on the gram, and the striking cover drew me in immediately. Luckily, I got a copy during a book outlet sale just before my birthday, and it turned out to be one of the best gifts I got myself. Bear in mind, I went into it blind—I had no idea what it was about, and that’s exactly how I like to enjoy books now.
Let’s jump straight to my thoughts on this.
I ended up listening to the audiobook as I read. You can get the audiobook on Libby for free with a library card. I can’t recommend the audiobook of “How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water” enough! From the engaging narrator to the immersive background noise (yes, even the slurping), every detail enhanced the listening experience. It felt like being right there in the moment, soaking up every word.
How not to drown in a glass of water follows Cara Romero, a resilient woman navigating life as an immigrant. From her roots in the Dominican Republic to her journey as an immigrant in the US, Cara’s story is both heartwarming and hilarious. She lost her job at the factory and is talking to a job counsellor. They have a few sessions and it is in these sessions, Cara talks about her life. It felt like having your favorite aunt share her stories about her life over a cup of tea (or in this case, a glass of water).
Cara’s wit, strength, and self-awareness shine through every page. Despite facing adversity, she never sees herself as a victim. The book delves into the complexities of motherhood, offering a perspective that’ll make you want to extend grace to your parents (yes, even the annoying ones!).
And let’s talk about the audiobook experience—it was incredible. I was completely immersed in Cara’s world, and I didn’t want it to end. If anything, it was too short! 😅
Ratings
